Desert National Park

Desert national park is situated in west Indian state of Rajasthan near the town of Jaisalmer.This is one of the largest national parks and covers around area of 3162sq km. The fragile ecosystem of the Thar supports a unique and varied wildlife species. In this vast ocean of sands lies the famous Desert National Park, which provides an excellent example of the ecosystem of the Thar Desert and its diverse wildlife and rich fauna.

Sand dunes form around 20% of the Park. The major landform consists of craggy rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, inters medial areas and fixed dunes which are quite suitable for the chinkara to move at high speed. The black buck is another common antelope of this region. Its other notable inhabitants are the desert fox, Bengal fox, wolf and desert cat. . The other wildlife here include the spiny- tail lizard, desert monitors, sand fish, chameleons, and snakes that include the deadly viper and krait.

The region is a heaven for migratory and resident birds of the desert. One can see many Eagles, Harriers, Falcons, Buzzards, Kestrel and Vultures. Short- toed Eagles, Tawny Eagles, Spotted Eagles, Laager Falcons and Kestrels are the most common among these.
